FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS






Q: Should I take out any insurance cover while at Bulgaria?
A:
It is recommended that all outside participants purchase his or her own 'travel' insurance.

Q: Is the price all included? Such as transfers from the Sofia airport to the hotel etc.
A:
Yes, the price covers all expenses: meeting at the airport; accommodation in the hotel in the Sofia City center; sightseeing tour in Sofia; transportation from Sofia to the field school, training courses, accommodation , thematic excursions etc.

Q: Will there be someone waiting for me when I arrive at the airport?
A:
Yes, our coordinator will meet you at the Sofia airport.

Q: Does it matter that I do not know any Bulgarian, though I will try to learn?
A:
You don't need to know Bulgarian in view of the fact that all the time you will attended with our coordinator and translator.

Q: Will there (in Bulgaria) be someone to meet me no matter what the time is as I have been looking at flights and they are all arriving on Sofia quite late on that date?
A:
We will ensure your meeting at the airport in any cases.

Q: Since I'm going to be in Bulgaria for a few days after the school session ends I was wondering what you advise I do about housing and food?
A:
Our excavations will continue also between the sessions and you can use your housing without additional payment (this is our common practice in such cases).

Q: What sort of weather will it be mid august time?
A:
Most of Bulgaria has a continental climate with hot and dry summer. You have to be prepared for hot and sunny weather (over 35 C), although any exception with cold and rainy summer is also possible.

Q: Is it possible to send cheque through the post?
A:
The postal services aren't reliable in Bulgaria. Bank transfer is the easiest way for us.

Q: Do we work at weekends?
A:
No. In Saturday and Sunday we organize the thematic trips to the other sites in the vicinity.

Q: Is there an age limit for participants?
A:
Participants under the age of 16 are not allowed in the excavation trench for reasons of insurance. There is no upper age limit - but participants should be reasonably fit!

Q: Is there a telephone on site?
A:
There is a site mobile, which can be used in an emergency. Otherwise there is a public phone box in the town of Belogradchik and in the Field School Hotel.

Q: How do we do our laundry?
A:
The Hotel provides the laundry services. It's included in the price.

Q: I have no archaeological experience, can I still participate in the Field School?
A:
Yes, prior experience is not necessary to participate in the Field School - archaeological methods are taught on site.

Q: How soon do I have to pay my tuition fee?
A:
We recommended that you send your 30% advance as early as possible to help guarantee your position.

Q: What type of clothing should I bring?
A:
Each student should be equipped with wind & water-proof clothing (pants & jacket), together with strong hiking boots which they will find invaluable on site and on the weekly field trip, which often involves long distance 'hikes' over wet and rough mountain terrain.
